Chuditch: Habitat
Habitat and Geographic Range
The chuditch once had a wider distribution but is now restricted to
the southwest region of Western Australia. Animals can withstand extremes
of seasonal temperature. They are generally dependent on good forest cover.
Nevertheless, if there is still sufficient bush, they can tolerate human
settlement for at least a short time and may poach for food around farms.
Food and Foraging
Although the animals live partly in trees and shrubs, they forage mainly
on the ground. Food consists mainly of insects and other invertebrates,
and small
birds and animals, all of which they seize with their sharp front teeth and
crush with the premolars and molars.
