Southern Brown Bandicoot, or Quenda: Morphology
Isoodon obesulus
Skull and Teeth
The skull is long and narrow; the small upper incisors have a gap between
them and the curved canine. The premolars are pointed; molars also with
a pointed
crown and side shelves.
Teeth formula: I 5/3; C 1/1; PM 3/3; M 4/4.
Body Shape and Size
The animals are rat-shaped, but larger and with short legs. Animals are
greyish-brown (rabbit coloured or darker) and with coarse fur. Males are
often slightly larger than females, with the head and body ranging from
30 to about 35 or more centimetres; the tail is a little less than half
that of the body length.
